The
University of Texas - Houston and Universidad Autónoma
de Guadalajara travelers health program take this opportunity
to welcome the newly arrived U.S. and Puerto Ricans and others
students to the C.U. and ICB Campus. Since 1976 University of
Texas and UAG medical school s initiated clinical research studies
among groups of adults from U.S. attending classes in Mexico
and have continued successfully until the present time. Because
of the ongoing participation of the students we have learned
that approximately 50% of U.S. students will develop diarrhea
while in Guadalajara. The major causes are bacterial agents
found most commonly in food and less commonly in water in Mexico.
Approximate
20% of cases are causes by shigella strains (which cause a severe
form of diarrhea and fever, known as dysentery). About 2% of
the illness is caused by a parasite which can occasionally lead
to chronic and recurrant illness even after returning home.
Most of the time, the illness is mild and will not interfere
with your daily life.. There are a number of things to do to
reduce the chance of acquiring illness, also there are things
to do if you should experience one of these intestinal infections.
If you develop diarrhea we recommend you come as soon as feasible
to our to clinic. Do not take your own medication as pre treatment
may interfere with the laboratory analysis we will do to find
out what is causing your illness.
